GTA 6: How to Get Your PS5 or Xbox Ready – Storage & Checklist

In short: GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. To start playing right away on launch day, free up storage now, update your console and pre-order the game so you can use the preload.
Storage: How much do you need?
Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed the final download size yet. For comparison: GTA 5 takes up around 100 GB on current consoles, and open-world games of this scale often need 100 to 150 GB today. We'll update this article as soon as official numbers are out.
| Console | Internal storage (usable) | Recommendation for GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 / PS5 Slim | approx. 667 GB / 848 GB | keep at least 150 GB free |
| PS5 Pro | approx. 1.8 TB | keep at least 150 GB free |
| Xbox Series X | approx. 802 GB | keep at least 150 GB free |
| Xbox Series S | approx. 364 GB | keep at least 150 GB free |
The Xbox Series S has the least space. It's especially worth deleting unused games now. Your save data stays in the cloud.
How to free up space
- PS5: Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps. Sort by size and delete what you no longer play.
- Xbox: My games & apps → Manage → Manage storage. You'll see all games sorted by size.
- External SSD: You can move older games to an external USB drive. GTA 6 itself should be installed on internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD (PS5) or storage expansion card (Xbox).
Preload & pre-order
The preload lets you download the game before release. On launch day it just gets unlocked, so you skip hours of waiting while everyone downloads at the same time.
For the preload to work, the game has to be pre-ordered and in your library. You can do that via the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store, or cheaper with a code you redeem on your account.
A pre-ordered code is redeemed just like a store purchase and unlocks the preload too. We explain how it works in our article on GTA 6 Code in a Box.
Redeeming a code
- PS5: PlayStation Store → menu (three dots) → Redeem code
- Xbox: Microsoft Store on your console → Redeem, or online at redeem.microsoft.com
